Is multicore really parallel

Hi,
I have read the wikipedia pages on multi core/dual core/core 2 duo concept.
But its still a littleunclear. Can someone please point me to a white paper or link on multi core concept. It is really two capable processors on one chip or is it capability subject to application design.
Regards
Kiran

Re: Is multicore really parallel

How about this reference  then recheck wikipedia?  Dual core processors have 2 separate processors which share cache and memory buss.  Generally, applications can be developed to adapt automatically to any combination of multiple CPUs and multi-core on one motherboard.
